Winter tyre options for electric cars

If you are looking to get a new set of winter tyres for your electric car or hybrid, then you have two good premium winter tyres that are non-studded and one that are studded.  Then you also have all-weather tyres that if they are winter approved can be used year-round, proving safety in all different weather conditions. This is perfect for areas that might not warrant the use of dedicated winter tyres, due to the limited time of actual snow.

The Nokian WR D4 are winter tires that are versatile in their use and has been designed for safe and balanced driving on both wet and snowy roads. They are also effective at preventing both slush and aquaplaning when driving in wet conditions. The tread that is designed like an arrow gives the tyres controlled steering in a balanced manner and firm grip in winter conditions. The tread blocks and sipes in tread pattern has designed shape and a precise role to deliver excellent grip and handling properties, when you drive. The sipes of the rigid rib in the center doesn’t run across its whole width, which improves precision and promotes controlled handling. To create grip without studs, they use a Nokian Twin Trac Silica rubber compound, which contains natural rubber, silica and canola oil, which ensures peak performance for snow and wet grip. They have low rolling resistance and therefore good also for electric cars. This allows you to cover a longer distance on every charge. The tyre wear is also lower.

Then you have the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3, which are also without studs, made for the Nordic winter conditions. With these you get some of the best grip on both snow and ice. They have biobased cryo crystal 3 grip particles added to create a sandpaper like surface structure of the tread to give the tyres very good grip on ice. For snow, they like the studded tyres use the tread designed pattern to give good grip in snow and to ensure that the snow doesn’t stick in the tread as you drive.

If you instead want studded tyres, then the best choice is the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9, which has double stud technology to provide the best grip for both braking and acceleration, but also when driving in curves and when passing on icy and snowy roads. It has also low fuel consumption and tyre noise. With low rolling resistance they are also good for electric cars. Studded tyres might not be allowed everywhere, so you will need to check your local legislation for what tyres can be used in your area.

For all-weather tyres you have the Nokian Weatherproof, which are approved for winter use and offers excellent safety and durability for year-round use. These tyres are great for areas that don’t have so long and consistent winters that it would warrant the use of dedicated winter tyres. With these tyres you have the safety that even if the winter weather would arrive you have tyres that can cope with it, while still having tyres that can cope with non-winter weather.
